Fern had been feeling rather restless for a number of days and was unable to settle anywhere. She was as cranky as a harpy with lice and snapped and snarled at Jerid when he tried to talk to her and once even kicked out at him.
Jerid wisely decided not to take her to work that day and left her in her yard and told her to get plenty of rest and feel better. Fern had turned her back on him and flicked her tail dismissively. Fern woke up. She stamped her feet to loosen the muscles and get her circulation flowing again after standing still all night asleep on her feet. Such a thing wasn't unusual for her,seeing as she was a centaur. Swishing her platinum-blond tail to dislodge the flies that had settled there to send the night, Fern trotted out of the stable she had all to herself and into the fenced yard outside.
Shuddering against the chill morning air, Fern immediately checked the sky above her and the horizon. This was something her kind did instinctively.
